Island resident receives certificate in husband’s honor

Pine Island Cove resident, Thelma Zwigart, shows her certificate in recognition of her husband’s involvement in the Battle of the Bulge.
Thelma Zwigart of Pine Island Cove was presented this certificate obtained by her son-in-law, Dick Thomas, service officer for the Pine Island American Legion Post 136, through the organization, Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.
This certificate states that “PFC Edward Zwigart, 33 83 079 of G Company 28th Division 112 Infantry, participated, endured and survived the greatest land battle, ever fought and won by the United States Army, 16 December 1994 – 52 January 1945.”
Edward was reported missing in action during this period, but eventually found his way back to his unit and Thelma still has the telegram from the war department advising her of both occasions. Edward survived and continued serving in his unit until the end of the war.
