Health Department continues no-swim advisory for Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach
The Health Department has continued its no swim advisory for the Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach.
Tests completed on Tuesday indicate that the beach water quality at Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach does not meet the criteria for enterococcus bacteria recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. This indicates that water contact may pose an increased risk of disease, particularly for susceptible individuals, officials said.
The department recommends not swimming at Cape Coral Yacht Club Beach.
This advisory will continue until bacteria levels are below the accepted EPA level, officials said. New test results should be available by 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 1.
Enterococcus bacteria normally inhabit the intestinal tract of humans and animals. The presence of an elevated concentration of enterococcus is an indicator of pollution, which may come from stormwater runoff, pets and wildlife, or sewage. Elevated levels of Enterococcus bacteria have been associated with an increased risk of swimming-associated gastroenteritis illness (diarrhea and abdominal pain).
Lee County Health Department monitors the quality of water at 13 beaches throughout Lee County on a weekly basis.
