Police: Man faces charges after fleeing from traffic stop

By Staff | Jul 31, 2010

A man who tried to flee a traffic stop by first ramming a police car has been taken into custody.
A man identified only as Erving Toombs was charged with driving without a license, felony fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a crash with property damage, tag not assigned and failing to register a motor vehicle.
Officers with the Fort Myers Police Department conducted a traffic stop in the 2500 block of Hunter Terrace Friday at 8:15 p.m. and the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Erving Toombs pulled over his car.
As an officer approached the vehicle, Toombs put his car in reverse and rammed the marked patrol car behind it, officials said.
One officer was still inside the squad car at the time of the crash.
Toombs then fled the scene.
Police continued to try to stop Toombs. Officers used stop sticks, damaging both tires on the driver’s side (rear and front), however, Toombs did not immediately stop. Toombs continued to drive to the area of Desoto Avenue off of Palm Beach Boulevard and ultimately stopped his car in the 3900 block of Palm Beach Boulevard where he surrendered to police, officials said.
He was taken into custody without incident.
No one was hurt.
