Motorcyclist in critical condition after collision with Jeep
A motorcyclist from Germany is in critical condition after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle in the 4900 block of Chiquita Boulevard South Monday afternoon. Hans-Werner Hey, 48, suffered severe trauma to his head and leg; however, his injuries are not life-threatening, officials said Monday evening.
According to a report issued by the city, at 2:03 p.m., Cape Police and Fire Rescue units responded to a 911 call reporting an accident near Chiquita Boulevard and Cape Coral Parkway.
A red 2002 Jeep driven by Donna L. Strong, 61, was leaving the parking lot at the Publix located at 4900 Chiquita Boulevard, South, and waiting to travel east across Chiquita.
Hey was riding a black 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle northbound on Chiquita in the outside lane. Strong exited the parking lot, and began driving across the southbound lanes of Chiquita and entered the median.
According to witnesses, Strong did not stop in the median and continued across the northbound lanes into the path of the motorcycle. Hey attempted to avoid Strong’s vehicle; however, the front of the Jeep struck the left side of the motorcycle.
The motorcycle was knocked to the ground and came to rest against the curb at the intersection of S.W. 49th Street and Chiquita. The driver of the motorcycle came to rest on the nearby sidewalk, the report states.
Hey suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital via Med Star. Strong suffered no injuries in the crash. The case is pending further investigation.
