Threat of bad weather forces postponement of Root Tournament
The 8th Annual David Lee Root Jr. Memorial Fishing Tournament has been postponed until next weekend due to the heavy rain forecast for Southwest Florida this weekend.
The fishing tournament, originally scheduled for this weekend, July 23 and 24, will begin with the captain’s meeting on Friday, July 30, at 7 p.m.
The fishing tournament will be now be held Saturday, July 31, with a 7 a.m. honor fishing start for all anglers. The entry fee is $50 per angler. There is no minimum number of anglers required per boat allowing for fishing by kayak or from the famous Matlacha fishing bridge.
All activities start and finish at D&D Matlacha Bait & Tackle, 3922 Pine Island Road, Matlacha.
The catch, photo and release tournament will support trauma services at Lee Memorial Hospital. The Root family lost their son, David, to an automobile accident, but thanks to the Trauma Unit, their son, Dustin, was saved.
Additional activities include a barbecue following the “weigh-in” along with prizes, a 50/50 drawing and other chance drawings.
Those not fishing can support the Trauma Center by attending the barbecue. Tickets for the barbeque may be purchased at $8 per adult and $5 for children 12 and under.
