A former Mariner High School teacher received one year of probation Tuesday after pleading guilty to a drug charge, according to officials.
Sheila Hoover, 56, of 13920 Robert Road, Pineland, pleaded guilty to one count of possession of a controlled substance-crystal methamphetamine. Samantha Syoen, spokeswoman for the State Attorney’s Office, said she received 12 months of probation and must undergo random drug testing.
Hoover was arrested in December by the Cape Coral Police Department’s Vice, Intelligence and Narcotics Unit as she drove out of the school faculty parking lot, according to police. A gram of crystal methamphetamine was found in her vehicle. An anonymous tip led to the surveillance operation.
Officials reported that Hoover, who taught 11th-grade English and speech, was charged with possession of crystal methamphetamine within 1,000 feet of a school, possession of a controlled substance and possession of narcotic equipment. She was booked into the Lee County Jail, then released on bond.
Joe Donzelli, spokesman for the Lee County School District, said Hoover retired from her job in March. She was suspended with pay in December until the school district completed its own investigation into the matter.
“She retired before the investigation came to fruition,” Donzelli said.
