King passes background check

By Staff | Jun 28, 2010

Interim Cape Coral Police Chief Jay Murphy reported that a background check on city manager choice Gary King came back clean, and the hiring process should continue to move forward.
In a memo dated June 25, 2010, to Mayor John Sullivan and the rest of city council, Murphy wrote, “Subsequent to our research and inspection of documents and individual interviews, we find no reason to preclude the hiring process from proceeding.”
The background check investigated King’s personal, financial, criminal, educational and employment histories.
Murphy wrote that the investigation centered around information provided by King during the hiring process and from application documents.
Murphy was able to interview people from King’s former employer, State Street Bank in Boston, where he operated at a high performance level.
King’s initial recruiter, direct supervisor, peers and “external sources,” such as acquaintances, were all interviewed.
Murphy wrote that he was able to verify all the information King provided regarding his work history.
He added that in some instances the information “understated” King’s accomplishments and responsibilities, according to the interviews conducted.
“Without exception, these individuals verified the contents of these documents,” he wrote.
Sullivan said he didn’t think the background check would yield any surprises about King.
“I don’t think anyone expected any surprises,” Sullivan said. “I talked with Chief Murphy and he seemed to be very pleased with what he found.”
