Big Fin Shark Tournament returns to Pine Island
With the heat of the summer sun shining down on Pine Island Sound, many anglers think twice about fishing, however, the Bobby Holloway Jr. Memorial Fund committee has just the answer.
All area anglers are invited to pull and “all nighter” during the second annual Big Fin Shark Tournament on Saturday, June 26, at Pineland Marina in Pineland. The cost to participate is $50 per person which includes a barbecue dinner, a commemorative T-shirt, ramp fees and extra parking passes. The prizes for this event are $1,000 for first place plus 10 ramp passes at Pineland Marina, $500 for second with seven ramp passes and $250 with five ramp passes. Shark catches will be weighed in throughout the night. Anglers will be asked to call officials when they hook a shark to see if a larger fish has already been registered. If the angler’s catch is not larger, they will be instructed to release the fish. An fish which do not survive will be donated to the Salvation Army soup kitchen to provide meals for the area hungry.
A captains meeting will take place at the marina at 4 p.m. followed by the start of the tournament. All sharks must be registered no later than 8 a.m. on Sunday morning when a breakfast of mullet and grits for the anglers will be served and the winners announced.
