Roadwatch update for Lee County

The Lee County Department of Transportation has issued the following Roadwatch update for the week of June 17-23.

I. Road Projects
— Colonial Blvd (CR 884) Six Laning from I-75 to State Rd 82 (approx. 2.7 miles in length) — Construction activities began on Monday, August 10, 2009. Proposed work consists of widening an existing four-lane highway facility, to a six-lane urbanized divided highway. This will include the installation of street lighting, signalization, bridge widening and utility modifications. Two 8-foot-wide asphalt multi-use sidewalks along the north and south sides of the road will be added. The tentative completion date is April, 2011.
— Colonial Boulevard — Utility work began on Oct 1, 2009 and will be ongoing around the bridge over Cypress Slough and Treeline Avenue on both the north and south side of Colonial Boulevard. for a few more weeks for relocation of utilities and final tie-ins. There will be storm drain installation related activities on the north and south side of the roadway. Bridge construction related activities will continue for the next few months on the south side of the roadway. Construction activities will continue under the I-75 Bridges along Colonial. — Daniels Parkway / Bell Tower Intersection Improvements — Construction activities began on Monday, March 1, 2010, on improvements to Daniels Parkway between U.S. 41 and the intersection of Brynwood Lane and Big Pine Way. This work will include improvements to the signal and Sauer Drive/Bell Tower Drive, median improvements, turn lane extensions, and sidewalks on the south side of the roadway. This work will require lane closures during much of the work effort. Prior to April 5, lane closures will be limited to night time hours only, 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. After April 5, lane closures may also occur during off-peak hours, after 9 a.m. and before 3 p.m.; however, an alternate route is suggested. — Gladiolus Update — The majority of the construction activities have been completed on the Gladiolus Drive project and all travel lanes are open for use. Minor construction activities may be occurring at various locations throughout the project limits which may require lane closures for short periods of time. Construction is expected to be complete by July 2010. Contract Robert Phelan at 533-8594 with any questions.
— Lee Boulevard/Sunshine Boulevard — Intersection of Lee Boulevard/Sunshine Boulevard, on Feb. 20, 2010, construction activities began and will take approximately 5 months to complete. The proposed work will extend along Sunshine Boulevard approximately 1,000 feet in each direction from Lee Boulevard; and includes the addition of a left turn lane and traffic signal modifications. — Littleton Road — On April 8, 2010, construction activities began on the south side of Littleton Road from U.S. 41 to Old U.S. 41, and is anticipated to take 6 months to complete. Proposed work includes construction of a 5-foot-wide sidewalk. Traffic will be reduced to one lane of traffic for work installation of pipe under the roadway starting on Tuesday, May 25, until Tuesday, June 30, between 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Please contact Eyra Cash at 533-8562 with any questions or comments.
— Summerlin Road Update, from Cypress Lake Drive to Boy Scout Road — Work continues on widening the southbound roadway from north of College to Cypress Lake, and on the northbound roadway near Boy Scout Road. Work to remove the asbestos contamination and to remove and replace the retaining wall on the south side has begun. The beams for the overpass will be set through out the month of June and will entail night time closures of the Summerlin College intersection from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Detour routes will be posted and off duty police officers will be on site to direct traffic. Additional dates for intersection closures throughout the month will be posted on message boards and in Roadwatch

II. Road/Bridge Maintenance
— 51st Street, W., will be closed June 1-19 between Ruth Avenue, N., to Sara Avenue, N., for pipe replacement under 51st Street at the canal. Any questions should be directed to Billy Byrd at 533-9400
— Alva Bridge #120042 on Broadway Street over Caloosahatchee — Lee County DOT Operations will be managing the 15-year rehab project for the Alva Bridge. The job is scheduled to start July 6, and finish early 2011, weather permitting. There will be single lane closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. During some night work activity the drawbridge will be closed to motor vehicle traffic overnight. Variable message boards will be placed to alert drivers to bridge closures. If you have any questions, please contact Ehab Guirguis at 533-9400.
— Cape Coral Bridge – Lee County DOT Operations will be managing the overlay project for the Cape Coral Bridge West Bound Lanes, Bridge # 124044 on College Parkway. The project is scheduled for 90 days starting Monday, April 5, 2010. There will be lane closures from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m., including weekends. If you have any questions, please contact Ehab Guirguis at

— Estero Parkway (U.S. 41 to Three Oaks Parkway), Lane Closure at the Railroad Crossing (East bound) — Seminole Gulf Railroad will be performing major rehabilitation of the railway crossing on Estero Parkway beginning the morning of Tuesday, June 1. East bound traffic will be limited to those areas west of the railroad crossing. The anticipated completion date is Wednesday, June 23. Motorists traveling between Three Oaks Parkway and U.S. 41 are
advised to avoid this area and seek alternative routes during the construction period. A detour route has been established for those unfamiliar with the area. If you have any questions, please contact Michael Tisch at (239)533-8110.
— Mid Point Bridge East Bound — Lee County DOT Operations will be managing the concrete repairs project for the Mid Point Bridge East Bound Lanes, Bridge # 1240496 on Veteran Memorial Parkway. The project is scheduled for 90 days starting Monday, May 10. There will be lane closures from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Ehab Guirguis at 533-9400.

III. Landscaping

IV. County-Wide Road Resurfacing

V. County-Wide Sidewalk Construction

VI. Signal Work
— Six Mile Cypress & Wal-Mart/Home Depot — On June 23, 2010, signal work from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lee County Sheriffs Office will be on site.
