Two people police say called in a bomb threat at the Lehigh Walmart so they could divert deputies while they committed a drug store robbery have been apprehended.
Casey G. Commander, 28, and Andrew James Edgell, 25, were taken into custody a short distance from the Homestead Pharmacy late Tuesday afternnoon and charged with one count of robbery with a weapon. Additional charges are pending, officials with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said in a prepared statement released Tuesday night.
Deputies were dispatched to the Wal-Mart at 2523 Lee Boulevard at approximately 4:53 P.M., after a man called the store and stated there was a bomb in the food section. The store was evacuated as deputies arrived to conduct a search.
Nothing harmful was found during the search and the store reopened a short time later.
Meanwhile, as deputies were responding to the Wal-Mart, an armed robbery occurred at the Homestead Pharmacy at 1320 Homestead Road N.
The victim states that at approximately 5 p.m., two individuals armed with weapons entered the store demanding Oxycodone and Xanax pills.
Once the suspects obtained the pills they were looking for, they fled on foot.
Deputies arriving on scene established a perimeter and both suspects, identified as Commander and Edgell, both of 107 N. Oregon Road, Lehigh Acres, were apprehended a short distance from the pharmacy.
Detectives with the Lee County Sheriff’s Officer Robbery Unit assumed the investigation. Detectives determined that Commander and Edgell made the bomb threat to create a diversion while they robbed the pharmacy, officials said.
