A man neighbors say was distressed by golfers playing behind his home has been charged with felony damage to property/criminal mischief after allegedly causing some $50,000 in damage to the course by spraying chemicals on the grass.
Carlton Edward Abrahamson, 67, of 17556 Laurel Valley Road, Fort Myers, was arrested after a security guard caught him spraying a substance on the greens Wednesday morning and held him for deputies, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office said.
The investigation began April 27 after deputies were called to the San Carlos Golf Club, at 7420 Constitution Circle, Fort Myers, in reference to vandalism to the golf course. Deputies met with the manager of the club, who told them the course has had an ongoing problem involving unknown individuals spraying chemicals on the greens during the overnight hours. The chemicals had caused an estimated $50,000 in damage, officials were told.
Delta District detectives, assigned to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division, assumed the investigation. Detectives learned Green #2 was damaged by the chemical, and a trail of dead grass led directly to the rear of the home at 17556 Laurel Valley Road. Detectives were told by several other residents that the person who lives in the home, Abrahamson, was responsible for the damage due to his anger over being disturbed by golfers.
Wednesday morning, at approximately 2:05 a.m, the Lee County Sheriff’s Office received a call from a security guard working at the course who said he had encountered Abrahamson spraying chemicals on the greens. The security guard detained the him and he was taken into custody upon deputy’s arrival.
Abrahamson was transported to the Lee County Jail.
