Mack announces sixth annual Service Academy Day Seminar

By Staff | Apr 26, 2010

WASHINGTON – Congressman Connie Mack (FL-14) announced Monday that he will host his sixth annual Service Academy Day Seminar on Saturday, May 1.
The Service Academy Day Seminar is designed for students and their parents who are interested in attending one of the nation’s service academies. The seminar is a unique opportunity for students and parents to meet with representatives of the U.S service academies to discuss the application process, academy life, and career opportunities within the various branches of the military.
This year’s Service Academy Day will take place on Saturday, May 1, in the Student Union Ballroom at Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. and the program begins at 9 a.m.
“Attending a U.S. Service Academy is a truly admirable way for a young person to serve their country,” Mack said in a prepared statement. “I strongly encourage students in Southwest Florida who are interested in attending one of the service academies to attend the seminar to learn more about the application process.”
One of the responsibilities of Members of Congress is to nominate outstanding young men and women to the four U.S. service academies. The process of securing a nomination is highly competitive – each applicant for nomination must demonstrate evidence of integrity, exceptional scholarship, leadership, physical aptitude, medical fitness, and a strong motivation to attend an academy in order to serve as an officer in the armed services, the Merchant Marines or the Coast Guard.
Students who seek a nomination from Mack are interviewed by a nominating committee comprised of former military officers and enlisted personnel as well as community leaders from throughout Southwest Florida. The nominating committee then objectively rates each nominee on a variety of criteria for Mack’s consideration. Mack then nominates the best applicants to each academy.
