Response from your Pine Island Chamber

By Staff | Apr 20, 2010

To the editor:

We want to thank the writers of two “Letters to the Editor” in the April 7 Eagle for expressing valid concerns. The “Yankee Snowbird” letter addressed the sign on Pine Island Road that directs drivers to the Welcome Center, 500 feet ahead. The writer felt that the sign was incorrectly positioned, thereby directing drivers unfamiliar with the area down Scallop Road. Lee County Department of Transportation is responsible for the directional signs along the road. They have been contacted regarding this possible confusion, and we will be following through to ensure that any necessary adjustments in the sign’s placement are made.

The second letter, “Word on the Island”, highlighted a long-standing concern that festivals such as MangoMania, the Music Festival, and the Seafood festival have outgrown any existing location on the island. The Chamber of Commerce and other island organizations have been struggling over the years to get a location for ALL Pine Island events ON the island. The best approach our island residents can take is to contact your county commissioners and lobby for a location on the island that the county would develop as a venue for large outdoor events. If there is an individual or business on the island that has usable acreage that could be developed in such a way, it is certain that the island organizations would welcome such a gift!

We would also like to remind readers that MangoMania is the only fund raiser for the Chamber of Commerce, and the profits generated not only provide the operational funds for the Welcome Center to be open year round, but those attending MangoMania are encouraged to visit Pine Island businesses during their stay. When first-time visitors are seeking lodging information in relation to MangoMania, our Welcome Center ambassadors refer them to Pine Island accommodations, restaurants, attractions and more.

The Chamber continues to be an advocate for all Pine Island businesses promoting their success at every opportunity including interfacing with governmental entities to clarify and resolve regulatory problems affecting those businesses. In addition, the Chamber will continue promote our “Welcome Center/Information Center” and all island activities for the benefit of our members, residents and visitors. We appreciate the input from our community and strive to grow and improve our value to them.
