Yankee snowbird
To the editor:
The village of Matlacha has become very colorful and unique with many visitors and one big eyesore right in the middle of town. Lob Lolly, after burning down, was never kept mowed. I decided I would clean it up taking me a while. I was impressed when the county picked up the boat and trailer. The trailer was so grown over with brush, you would not know it was there. One good thing happened, they took the brush and debris I had piled up there.
A word on the Chamber of Commerce.
The sign coming into Matlacha says, Chamber of Commerce, 500 feet ahead with the arrow pointing directly down Scallop Drive, so the snowbirds turn there ending up at the dead end of Scallop Drive and I mentioned this to a number of people. One man mowing the ditches said I did that too when I first came down here.
I live on Scallop Drive and I see hundreds of cars coming down this road. The people are probably too embarrassed to mention it to the people in the Chamber of Commerce building and the people running the Chamber of Commerce think we are just snowbirds, too stupid to understand the sign.
The telephone poles leading to Pine Island are impressive, but I miss the hand lettering painted on the black top leading to Pine Island that used to say “Yankee Go Home.” I wonder if the person doing the painting went home.
