The deadly consequences of drinking, drug use, and driving will soon become graphically demonstrated to residents of Lee County, as Drug House Odyssey 2010 opens its doors March 23, 24 and 25. Located at Cape Christian Fellowship, 2110 Chiquita Boulevard South in Cape Coral, this real-life play follows a quartet of high school students from a casual encounter with drinking and drugs, through the emergency room and courtroom. Drug House Odyssey is even more compelling, since it uses actual law enforcement and medical professionals, including police officers, sheriff deputies, doctors, state attorneys, EMS responders and chaplains, re-enacting their roles in everyday life.
Participating organizations include: Lee Memorial Health System, Cape Coral Police Department, Fort Myers Police Department, Cape Coral Fire Department, Lee County Emergency Medical Services, Office of the State Attorney 20th Judicial Circuit, Florida Division of Alcoholic Beverages & Tobacco, Cypress Lake and Ida S. Baker High School drama departments, and Cape Christian Fellowship.
On March 23, 24 and 25 between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. students in Lee County will take field trips to the event. On March 24 between 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Lee County Drug House Odyssey 2010 will be open to the general public. Throughout the 3 days, a total of 2,400 people are expected to attend this event which is completely free to the public. No reservations are required for the Wednesday evening presentations.
As part of this year’s Drug House Odyssey, the Coalition will present a Town Hall Meeting on Preventing Underage Drinking on March 24 at 5 p.m. at Cape Christian Fellowship. The Lee County Coalition for a Drug-Free Southwest Florida, in collaboration with the Federal Government’s Interagency Coordinating Committee on the Prevention of Underage Drinking, is sponsoring the event. Parents, teachers, officials, youth, and other community members will be educated about the impact that underage drinking has on the community, and they will develop possible ways to address this issue. Panelists include area law enforcement officials and prevention experts. The Town Hall Meeting is free and open to the public.
