A Cape Coral man remained in jail Thursday after robbing a woman with a gun and attempting to flee the area, officials said.
Steven Mark Fischer, 26, of 1135 N.E. Fifth Ave., was charged Wednesday with one count of robbery with a firearm. According to booking records, he remained in the Lee County Jail on Thursday because he was denied bond.
At 1:18 a.m. Wednesday, police received a 911 call about shots being fired during a robbery attempt at 2946 S.W. Third Place, according to Cape police police spokeswoman Connie Barron. The victim told police that she and her friend were outside when they were approached by a man.
Kayla Nunley said they were outside smoking a cigarette when she “heard what sounded like an animal rummaging in the bushes behind her.” A Cape police report states that Nunley heard something running and then “felt a blunt object, described as a stick, strike the back of her head.”
Nunley observed a white male with camouflage pants and a thin clothed mask over his face. She told police that the man yelled at her to “give him the money and her purse” or he was going to shoot her, according to the reports.
The man grabbed the victim’s purse from her arm and fled.
Barron reported that at some point during the incident, the victim and other witnesses reported hearing a gunshot. Cape police secured a perimeter and when a suspicious vehicle attempted to leave the neighborhood, an officer initiated a traffic stop. Fischer, a passenger, was identified as the robber.
According to police, Nunley’s purse was located inside the vehicle.
Fischer was arrested and charged.
He has a court date set for April 19, according to jail booking records.
