By Staff | Mar 17, 2010

A fire that occurred at a duplex at 229 S.E. Van Loon remained under investigation Wednesday evening, although the cause appears to be accidental.
The fire caused $90,000 in damage to the structure, $10,000 in damage to contents and sent one person
to the hospital.
Cape Fire units responded to the fully-engulfed duplex structure fire at 12:24 p.m, When units arrived, one male occupant had been pulled from the home by neighbors just before an explosion caused by an oxygen bottle. The victim was initially transported to Lee Memorial Hospital as a “Priority 1” patient, although the last update was that the patient was stable.
Fire units rescued a dog from one of the bedrooms and administered oxygen to the pet.
The Cape Coral fire investigator has determined that the point of origin was in and around the recliner in the living room on the right side of the duplex. The heat source remains undetermined at this time.
Cape Fire crews did an excellent job attacking the fire and preventing it from spreading to the left side of the duplex, officials said.
