Boats are a very important asset to many on Pine Island. Surrounded by water, the island is a magnet for boating enthusiasts of all kinds. This weekend, boat owners and water craft lovers will want to plan a visit to St. James City for the Harbor Boat Show. Touted as an event to show off wooden, classic and antique boats, organizer Paul Jones said that this show will be much more than just that.
“While the thrust my be classic boats, we are happy to welcome anyone who simply takes pride in their boats,” said Jones. “If someone shows up in a 12- foot aluminum boat they are proud of, they will get the same courtesy as those who arrive in a classic wood boat. The key to this event is to have a good time, share in some fellowship and to raise money for a good cause.”
Registration and admission are free as is parking.
The boat show will be staged along the docks of the Monroe Canal behind the Old Pine Island Marine, Pine Island Variety, St. James boat ramp, Low Key Tiki and the Monroe Canal Marina. Those who would prefer to trailer their boats also will be accommodated as well. The boat show will take place on Saturday, March 20, from noon to 4 p.m.
Jones has presented similar events in Henderson Harbor, New York, but unlike his past ventures, this event will not be a contest.
“People have said I am nuts for not making this a competition, but we want everyone who wants to participate to come out and enjoy the day and not be intimidated by fancier boats,” said Jones. “I have no intention of making this competitive, just as an opportunity for everyone to show and share what they have.”
In addition to boats, Jones said that many area vendors will have displays at the event. Among them will be local establishments who offer visitors places to stay, the manufacturer of aluminum tiki huts, boat lifts and docks, charter guides, Twisted Metal art and more. Providing entertainment throughout the event will be a live radio feed courtesy of Avenue Radio, 1410 AM, known as “timeless cool.”
Other activities during the event will be a free fishing seminar presented by Capt. Corey McGuire, a very successful tournament fishing competitor from Bokeelia. The seminar will take place at the Olde Pine Island Marine and Tackle, beginning at 2 p.m.
Also offered will be a raffle for a unique prize.
“We have been donated at 2000 Dodge Custom Van,” said Jones. “The van has received a road worthiness certificate from Carl’s Service in St. James City and only has 37,000 miles on the odometer. Someone is going to drive away with a great ride from this event.”
Serving as the center of the social functions, Low Key Tiki will offer patrons of the event, food and beverages at reasonable prices.
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Beacon of HOPE.
“I first became involved with the Beacon after Hurricane Charley and learned how important the work they do continues to be here is. They continue to assist the residents of Pine Island who are in need due to the economic downturn we all are currently dealing with,” said Jones. “I appreciate the fact that they take a proactive rather than a reactive approach. When they hear of a person in need, they don’t wait for that person to come to them, instead they reach out to that person. I have had the pleasure to work with the people at the Beacon and find them to be knowledgeable and friendly, that is why I have chosen the Beacon to be the benefactors of this event.”
