A Cape Coral man was released from the hospital after the bicycle he was riding collided with a moving vehicle Friday night.
Robert Lee Berry, 26, of 1618 N.E. 35th St., had been discharged from Lee Memorial Hospital as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Lee Memorial Health System spokeswoman Pat Dolce.
Cape police responded to an accident involving a bicyclist at 9:13 p.m. Friday near the intersection of Kismet Parkway and Del Prado Boulevard North, said police spokeswoman Connie Barron. Berry was riding a silver Triax bicycle and traveling south on Del Prado in the outside lane.
Berry turned eastbound across the southbound lanes of Del Prado and entered the path of a 1992 Toyota driven by Daniel Daniele, 47, of 447 N.E. Eighth Terrace. According to Barron, the car skidded about 162 feet and the front side of the Toyota struck the left side of Berry’s bicycle.
The impact tossed Berry off of the bicycle, onto the hood of the car and into the windshield, she reported. Berry fell off of the passenger side of the car, struck the pavement and came to rest in the median of the roadway. He was not wearing a bicycle helmet at the time of the accident.
According to Barron, Berry sustained serious head trauma from the impact with the car’s windshield. Due to the life-threatening signs of the injuries, he was trauma-alerted to the hospital. Berry had critical injuries to his head and chest area Saturday, reports indicate. Daniele was not injured in the crash.
Alcohol may have been involved in the accident, Barron said.
A blood sample was taken from Daniele after the accident to check for alcohol and drugs, according to a police report. No samples were taken from Berry for testing.
The investigation is ongoing.
