Teens can win big prizes at The Rock Star Dance event

By Staff | Feb 8, 2010

From a flat screen TV to an IPOD, Wii, X-Box or other Nintendo products, there are great prizes out there for talented teens at the Grace Community Center’s tZhe Rock Star Dance Featuring You event on Saturday, Feb. 13
Teens 14 through 17 are invited to compete with doors opening at 6 p.m. and the dance starting at 7 p.m. Winners will be announced at 9:30 that night.
There will be lots to do even if you aren’t in the contest, organizers said, including playing at the Best Buy Experience Station, which will be set up at the event.
“We’re trying to give teens a fun, safe environment for them to enjoy,” said Community Center director Chris Jackson. “That includes being here with their friends, dancing, playing video games and eating food.”
The cost is $15 and part of the proceeds benefit the Have a Heart for Haiti relief effort. Admission includes two free sodas and a chance to win many prizes.
The dance contest itself is for ages 14 to 17 and organizers ask that teens do bring an ID.
Parents are welcome.
“This space is terrific,” Jackson said of the center, which borders North Fort Myers and Cape Coral. “It’s almost 13,000 square feet and is the third largest hall in north Lee County.”
The Rock Star Dance is being presented by Grace Community Center, Cohen & Cohen Catering and the North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce, with partnership support from Best Buy, Costco, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart and more support from Sony, Apple and X-Box.
“Baron Cohen of Cohen & Cohen Catering is one of the sponsors, and his son will be be helping as a deejay,” Jackson continued. “If it’s successful, we hope to do monthly events.”
“We’re happy to be supporting the event,” said North Fort Myers Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kim Constantine. The chamber office will help with information and take reservations for tickets.
Advance tickets are also available at the Grace Community Center Thrift Store, which is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or you can reserve your tickets by calling the North Fort Myers Chamber at 997-9111. You can even reserve by e-mail at info@nfm-chamber.org, or tickets may be purchased at the door (cash only).
