Two men have been arrested in connection with an early morning attack on an 18-year-old male who suffered head and facial injuries after being beaten and robbed in the 900 block of Southeast 21st Avenue Sunday.
Robert John Lynch, 29, and Nicholas F. Brady, 28, were taken into custody early this morning after police located the pair at 701 S.E. 9th Terrace, officials said. Lynch was charged with robbery and battery, Brady with robbery and felony battery, police said in a prepared statement rleased Sunday night.
According to that statement, Cape Police responded to a 911 call at 1925 Viscaya Parkway at 2:37 a.m. They met with a man who said he had just been robbed and battered. The man told Cape detectives that he was driving westbound on Hancock Bridge Parkway with passengers in his car when he pulled up next to a white, 4-door Lincoln SUV at a red light. The man, whose identity has not been released, told police the driver of the SUV just stared at him. When the light turned green, the two vehicles continued westbound, with the SUV following closely and flashing its high beams when they stopped at the next light. The victim took his passengers home and when he left the residence, the SUV again began following him. He pulled over on Southeast 21st Avenue, rolled down his window and asked the other driver what he wanted. The other driver reportedly told the man he was about to find out, and the victim decided to exit his vehicle. However, the driver forced the victim’s door closed twice before he could finally get out. Once he exited his vehicle, the driver placed him in a headlock and choke hold, and began to strike him in the head and face. The passenger in the SUV then exited the vehicle and reportedly began to kick him in the head, officials said, adding the driver demanded that the victim empty his pockets, and he gave the driver his wallet and cell phone.
The driver then pulled out a pocket knife and threatened the victim, officials said.
The passenger in the SUV became remorseful and handed the victim his undershirt so that he could wipe up his blood. They also gave him back his wallet and cell phone, and offered him a ride home or to the hospital. He refused, and the two men got back in their SUV and left. As they left, the victim was able to get the license plate number of the SUV. He was able to give detailed descriptions of the two men who reportedly assualted him to the detectives.
At 6:34 a.m., Cape police located the SUV at 701 S.E. 9th Terrace. When they knocked on the door, Robert Lynch answered. He stepped outside and said his roommate, Nicholas Brady was inside sleeping. Brady was located in the bedroom and detained. Within the bedroom in plain view, was a pair of khaki pants with blood spots. In the living room in plain view, police found a pair of white shoes also with blood on them.
During an interview with detectives, Lynch admitted that he had been drinking and Brady was driving the SUV earlier that morning when they saw the victim driving on Hancock weaving in and out of traffic, police said. They decided to follow the victim for awhile but then the victim pulled over and got out of his vehicle. Lynch stated that they kicked the victim. At this point, Lynch ended the interview.
Brady told detectives that he did not know what was going on that night and provided no additional information.
Based on the victim’s statement and the additional evidence located at the residence, Lynch and Brady were arrested, booked and transported to Lee County Jail.
