Mariner High drama students perform well at Thespian festival

By Staff | Jan 23, 2010

Drama students from Mariner High took both superior and excellent ratings at the District 6 Thespian festival.
On Jan. 15-16 the 14 students from Mariner High went to the thespian festival hosted at North Port High School with 800 other students from the five counties of Southwest Florida.
“It is a competition and festival held every year,” said Patricia Stoudt, a chorus teacher at Mariner High. “They can do monologues, a scene with two people or a large scene with a bunch of people or sing a song from any Broadway show.”
Four acts from Mariner High and five students — Janie Blanco, Kaitlin Davis, Casey Gymrek, Rocco Nicosia and Adrienne Wadsworth — are moving on to a state festival later this year.
Gymrek, Davis and Blanco all received superior ratings at the festival while Nicosia, Wadsworth and Maglione all received excellent ratings.
The schools’ One-Act Play took an overall excellent rating, award for Best Actress for Davis and an award for the Best Set.
According to Stoudt, students were graded at the festival by three different judges and needed to receive a 90 or more to go to the state festival.
“Ultimately, for those students going to college, it is a good thing to put on their resume,” said Stoudt.
There is a also scholarship connected with the state festival, she said, some some colleges send out scouts to observe the students and offer them money for college.
