Killer cold claims more than just plants

A barracuda killed by the cold temperatures

Sub-freezing temperatures damaged gardens and threatened crops around the region throughout the weekend.

While island residents did their best to cover fragile plants and bring pets indoors, other, not-so-fortunate species that share the waters around Pine Island didn’t fare so well.

During the low tide Monday morning, dozens of fish could be seen littering the shoreline in Flamingo Bay and elsewhere on the island.

As the fish floundered helplessly until the sun warmed the shallow waters others, succumbed to the freezing temperatures.

While the majority of the fish killed were mullet, other species spotted belly-up included needlefish, jack and small snook.
