Winning holiday greeting cards on display

By Staff | Dec 15, 2009

This month the Lee Education Center in Fort Myers will display holiday cards designed by students.
The Lee County School Board recognized eight winners of the county-wide Annual Holiday Greeting Card Celebration during its Dec. 8 meeting and large prints of their cards are posted in the lobby for the holiday season.
Joe Donzelli, district spokesperson, said the level of students who participate in the competition changes each year. Last year it featured students from the elementary level and this year from middle school.
High school students will create greeting cards for the 2010-2011 school year, according to organizers.
This year’s final eight were: Angela Rhimany from Trafalgar Middle, Brooke Younger from Cypress Lake Middle, George Diggs from Trafalgar Middle, Julie Villarreal from Alva Middle, Kaila Fuentes from Alva Middle, Kasey Clause from Bonita Springs Middle, Paige Bates from Diplomat Middle and Rachel Santana from Fort Myers Middle.
“They get a certificate from the board, with their name and a small version of their card, and a plaque,” said Donzelli.
The poster-sized cards will be on display until Dec. 22.
Schools who participate in the competition forward student designs to a committee made up of school district employees. Donzelli said a secret ballot is held and the designs that receive the most votes are chosen as that year’s holiday cards.
This is the 20th year that the district has hosted the greeting card celebration.
Digital copies of the top eight designs are available at the Web site of the Lee County School District (www.leeschools.net).
