Cape Coral Finance Director Mark Mason is stepping down from his post for another position.
Although Mason’s official last day with the city will be Jan. 10, his final day in office will be Dec. 31.
Mason did not return a phone call seeking comment Thursday, and any additional information about his new job is unknown.
“Mark (Mason) is a valuable member of our management team, and his expertise in municipal finance has been a tremendous asset to Cape Coral,” interim City Manager Carl Schwing said in a prepared statement. “I thank him for his service to this community and wish him nothing but the best in his future position. His experience and knowledge will be missed.”
Mason has served as the city finance director since June 23, 2003. Previously, he was the finance director for the city of Sebastian, Fla.
District 1 Councilmember Marty McClain said he is not surprised by Mason’s decision.
“I don’t think it’s a knee-jerk reaction. It’s something he may have been pondering for a while,” he said. “He’s looking out for the betterment of himself and his family.”
District 4 Councilmember Chris Chulakes-Leetz wished Mason well, and added that he will get the chance to speak with Mason during an exit interview.
Schwing has appointed the department’s deputy director, Linda Senne, as the interim finance director.
Senne has worked for the city’s Financial Services Department since July 2001.
Schwing will evaluate the position and will make a determination on how to proceed.
