Students from Cape Coral High School’s Knowledge Master team recently earned second place out of 23 Florida schools in a computer-based competition which tests academic content.
Sue Propert, a teacher at Cape Coral High and the team advisor, said 15 of the unit’s 17 members competed in the 53rd Knowledge Master Open on Dec. 2. Students spent approximately four hours taking the test.
Propert said two team members could not take the test because of other class obligations.
Students from the United States and international schools all took the exam at the same time.
“We came in second in the state, which is a very big deal,” Propert said. “We have never done that well before.”
Most of the students who competed are also members of the county’s A-Team, a televised academic competition developed by the Foundation for Lee County Public Schools.
Propert, who has coached the team for the past five years, said the content is not simple trivia.
“It’s not really trivia, it is knowledge they would’ve hopefully picked up in their high school classes,” she said.
The Community School of Naples, a private school with 265 students, came in first place in the competition. Cape Coral High, with 1,600 students, came in second with a score of 1,407 to 1,506.
The mean score for all high schools was 1,183.
Other schools in Lee County that participated in the competition were Fort Myers High, 11th place; Cypress lake High, 12th place; North Fort Myers High, 17th place; and Estero High, 20th place.
Schools from China, Costa Rica, Korea and Guatemala also participated in the competition.
