Lee County Sheriff’s Office traffic homicide investigators have determined that the Honda involved in a car-school bus accident last Thursday had two bad rear tires. That factor, coupled with the wet road conditions, caused the car to lose traction and spin out of control into the bus, officials said in a prepared statement released Wednesday.
The victims, Elfego Mercado-Quintana, 28, of 5821 Buckingham Road #5 and Adrian Nunez-Romero, 30, of 5821 Buckingham Road #2 were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash, but both succumbed to multiple internal injuries, officials said.
The crash occurred on Buckingham Road, just south of Orange River Road, at approximately 8:25 a.m. Dec. 3 after the driver of the northbound car, Mercado-Quintana, lost control while rounding the curve and veered into the southbound lane, where it was struck by the bus, officials said.
Both occupants of the Honda were pronounced dead at the scene.
Three people, the driver and two school district employees, were on the school bus at the time of the accident. None of them were seriously injured.
