Vehicle collides with school bus

By Staff | Dec 4, 2009

A Fort Myers accident involving a black Honda and a Lee County school bus ended in two fatalities Thursday morning.
The driver and passenger of the Honda, Elfego Mercado-Quintana, 28, and Adrian Nunez-Romero, 30, were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident on Buckingham Road, south of Orange River Road.
According to a report from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the Honda reportedly lost control as he rounded a curve in the northbound lane of Buckingham. The car slid into the opposite lane and collided with the school bus.
John Sheehan, spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said the accident is under investigation by the LCSO Traffic Unit.
“That isn’t something they will determine quickly. It will take a few days,” he said.
Three individuals were on the school bus during the collision including bus driver Linda Godwin, 55, and district employees Joyce Pohto, 53, and Linda Fatic, 57, who is from Cape Coral.
No students were on the bus when the accident occurred.
Neither the bus driver nor two employees were seriously injured in the crash.
Although the official cause of the accident is under investigation, Sheehan said road conditions likely contributed to the crash.
“We think the wet roads, rain and driving conditions were most likely a contributing factor,” he said.
It is unknown whether students had just been dropped off at school or if the bus was traveling to pick up students.
School district officials referred questions to the sheriff’s office.
