Holiday Carol Sing major food drive for the hungry

By Staff | Nov 24, 2009

The 19th annual Holiday Carol Sing, an old-fashioned sing-a-long and feed-the-hungry-event intended for the entire family, will be held Thursday, Dec. 10, in downtown Fort Myers.
The annual Holiday Carol Sing is both organized and sponsored by the Galloway Family of Dealerships.
Although the admission for the event is free, those who attend are asked to bring cash donations and canned goods for the Soup Kitchen, which is operated by Community Cooperative Ministries Inc.
The event will feature three performances due to the overwhelming popularity of the event in the past years.
The three performances will begin at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. with doors opening 30 minutes prior to show time.
The performances will feature the First Presbyterian Church Choir, soloists and other special guests who will sing holiday carols.
Mrs. and Mr. Claus will also be present at their Santa’s House preparing for the holidays with their elves. A live manger scene will be displayed in the courtyard of the church for those in attendance to enjoy. Frosty the Snowman also will make an appearance.
The canned foods collected during the event will go towards the Soup Kitchen on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Fort Myers.
“We feed anyone who is hungry, but we also provide the tools for them to help themselves,” CCMI Executive Director Sarah Owen said in a prepared statement. “Our goal is to help people get back on their feet.”
Last year, CCMI received more than $4,800 and 6,000 pounds of canned foods and other non-perishable items during last year’s Holiday Carol Sing event, which was immediately provided to those who were in need.
“The need for food is absolutely critical this year,” said organizer Sam Galloway Jr. in a prepared statement. “Rising unemployment and the downturn in our local economy have caused many of our neighbors to ask for food to feed their families for the first time in their lives. Our shelves are bare — we need our community to get together and help with all the canned goods they can.”
The event will be held at First Presbyterian Church located at 2438 2nd St. in downtown Fort Myers.
