German Christmas Market set for Nov. 28
The German American Social Club will host its first free Christmas Market on Saturday, Nov. 28, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the club’s grounds on Pine Island Road.
Hubert Prem, coordinator of the event, said the Christmas Market is a very wonderful, old German tradition that is held before Christmas time. He explained that in the older times, this type of Christmas Market would bring individuals together at a church to buy all kinds of items for holiday presents.
Prem said the Christmas Market that will be held here in Cape Coral is more or less the same as the ones held in Germany.
He said the German American Social Club’s Christmas Market is different only because it is connected to good food and drink.
The market will feature vendors, food, Christmas carols, Santa Claus, arts and crafts and live entertainment.
Hafenkapelle and Edelweiss Chorus will perform Christmas carols throughout the night.
Prem said their brass band will play Christmas carols and the chorus will sing twice during the event. He explained that there will be Christmas music filling the air at all times during the event.
The garden is nicely decorated, Prem said, and will showcase some exhibitors.
The German ladies of the club also will have all kinds of needle work crafts, which they have been creating all year, available during the event.
Gluehwein, which is a hot, spiced red wine will be served, along with christstollen, a traditional German bread cake that is served during the holiday season as a gift when visiting another household. Gingerbread, roasted almonds, bratwurst and German beer and wine will also be served.
The German American Social Club is hoping to have a great turn out for its first Christmas Market event.
“Since we are doing it the very first time, I am hoping we will have about 400 to 500 people,” Prem said.
Admission and parking is free for the Christmas Market.
The German American Social Club is located at 2101 SW Pine Island Rd.
