The 18th annual Stars of Tomorrow scholarship program will showcase 58 young performers during a weekend competition.
June Sommerfield, director of Stars of Tomorrow, said the program was initiated by the Cape Coral City Council, which lead to the formation of the Cape Coral Council for Arts and Humanities Inc.
She said the arts and humanities group was formed to coordinate the arts for Cape Coral.
“We started the scholarship program for our youth and every year we get sponsors for the show,” Sommerfield said, adding that the group gives first and second prizes every year for every age group in every category.
Auditions for Stars of Tomorrow were held Oct. 17 with a panel of five judges, who chose 58 talented elementary, middle, high school and college students to participate in the competition.
Students competed in vocal, drama, dance and instrumental performances.
Sommerfield said half of the students will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday and the other half will perform at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Those chosen from the Friday and Saturday performances will take part in the command performance, which will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday.
Former Mayor Jim Burch will help the Cape Coral Council for Arts and Humanities Inc. in presenting the awards to the winners.
Former City Manager Terry Stewart will serve as master of ceremonies, along with honoring the crowd with a musical rendition.
The arts and humanities group is responsible for more than $4,000 in awards, Sommerfield said.
The public is invited to attend the weekend performances. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students 12 years old and younger.
Advanced tickets can be purchased at the Cape Coral Cultural Park Theatre.
“It’s a wonderful, refreshing program in this day and age to see these young people do the best thing they can,” she said.
Sommerfield encourages people to come out and enjoy the weekend.
“It is a lovely show,” she said. “The talent in this area is superb.”
Those who attend the performances are encouraged to bring non-perishable food, which will be donated to the Cape Coral Caring Center.
The co-sponsor of the event is the Cape Coral Cultural Park Theatre, which will host the performances. The theater is located at 528 Cultural Park Blvd.
