Harris D. Nieusma
Harris D. Nieusma, 93, of Point Marion, PA and formerly of Pine Island, passed away on Monday, Nov. 16, 2009 in Point Manor Personal Care Home, Point Marion. Born in Newaygo County, Michigan on June 30, 1916, he was a son of the late Dick and Lillian Nieusma.
Growing up in Holland, MI, he attended Holland High School, and was employed by the Holland Police Department. He was a charter member of the Holland chapter of the fraternal Order of Police. He served in WW II as an aircraft mechanic in Pearl Harbor in 1945. He became the undersheriff of Ottawa County, MI in 1950 with Sheriff Gerald Vanderbeek and served eight years. In 1958, Harris was appointed County Clerk to finish the term of deceased incumbent, Anna Van Horsen, an office he held until he retired in 1978. He then moved to Pine Island where he enjoyed boating and building his retirement home where he lived until 2005.
Surviving are his three sons, Harris Nieusma, Jr. of Barre, VT; Gerald E. Nieusma and wife Judy of Morgantown, W. VA and William Nieusma and wife Sue of Ada, MI; 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dick H. Nieusma, Jr. and wife Ruth of Grand Rapids, MI and many nieces and nephews.
Harris was predeceased by his wives, Augusta and Vivian and third wife Frances Little Nieusma on Feb. 19, 2009; a daughter Barbara; a brother Edwin J. Nieusma and sisters, Betty, Ruthie and Dorothy.
A memorial services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at 1 p.m. in the Pint Manor Personal Care HOme, Point Marion, with Rev. Richard Work officiating.
