Southwest Floridians in and around Cape Coral will have the opportunity to shield their identities, help their community, and protect the environment at a “shred day” hosted by the city of Cape Coral and Goodwill’s document destruction service, “Secure Shred” on Nov. 18.
Goodwill’s Secure Document Destruction service will be at Cape Coral City Hall, 1015 Cultural Park Blvd., to accept personal papers and other sensitive documents–which will be shredded for free. Customers will be limited to one bag or box for free shredding (additional items will be accepted for $5 per bag or box).
Sensitive documents will be collected in locked bins for transportation back to Goodwill’s secure shredding facility in North Fort Myers. Patrons will be provided with a certificate of destruction once their materials are shredded.
This will be the second year that Goodwill Secure Shred and the city have partnered for a Shred Day. At the 2008 Cape Coral Shred Day event, Goodwill’s document destruction service accepted approximately 6,000 pounds of personal papers and other sensitive documents at Cape Coral City Hall.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, more than 9 million Americans are victims of identity theft or identity fraud every year. The majority of ID theft occurs when the thief has direct contact with the victim’s personal information, through a stolen or lost wallet, rifling through a mailbox or trashcan, or even lifting documents from inside a home or business. Secure destruction of these personal documents is the first step in identity protection.
Goodwill Industries of Southwest Florida created its document destruction business in 2007 to provide jobs for local individuals with severe disabilities while also providing a valuable service to the community. Goodwill provides document destruction to numerous Southwest Florida businesses and agencies, including LYNX Services, the United Way, the City of Cape Coral, and the City of Fort Myers.
Participants in the City of Cape Coral’s Special Populations program will assist Goodwill at the event. Special Populations is a Parks & Recreation department program dedicated to assisting persons with developmental disabilities to foster independence, self-esteem, individual growth and interpersonal relationships.
