Learn the fiery rhythms and memorable dances of West Africa!
Master Drummer and Dance choreographer Ndakhte Ndiaye who recently became a resident of St. James City, will launch exciting new classes and cultural events at two Pine Island locations beginning in November. The first location is at the St. James City Civic Center, on Fourth Avenue and Lemon Street, where African Drum and Dance classes will take place every Thursday and Sunday evening at 6:30 p.m., beginning Nov. 5. An 800 year-old harvest rhythm from Senegal will be taught on authentic drums and accessories which are provided. Part of the class will also include African dance, taught in a follow-along fashion, with live drumming and choreography! Every one is welcome to drum, dance or do both in these exciting classes, and no experience is necessary. Classes will be ongoing, join at any time. A nominal $5 donation includes the class, use of a drum, and an informal soirée after class in which refreshments will be served.
The second Pine Island location is Bokeelia’s beautiful new Coast Connection Family Boating Center at Jug Creek. Inside of their quaint boathouse, Ndiaye’s African Drum class will take place every Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. beginning Nov. 4. This breathtaking location offers the tranquility of a waterfront setting, with all of the amenities of being indoors. Each Wednesday students will learn ancient rhythms, drum calls from remote villages, fascinating history, and everything about playing the Djembe and DounDounba drums. Mel Meo’s Seafood Wagon will be on hand to prepare delicious seafood which can be enjoyed amid the stunning view of Shell Cut Pass. A $10 donation includes the class, drums and refreshments.
