A deputy responding to a bank robbery spotted a car matching the getaway vehicle and pulled it over, leading to the apprehension of the man investigators believe had just held up the Royal Palm Bank in Fort Myers.
Deputies were called to the bank at 7040 Winkler Road at approximately 11:19 a.m. Tuesday. While on the phone with dispatch, the caller provided a detailed description of the suspect, the make and model of the suspect’s vehicle, and the direction the suspect was traveling, officials said. The robber was described as a white male, 5’6” – 5’7″, 170 pounds wearing a white shirt, jeans and a mask. Officials were told he was traveling in a red Volkswagen Beetle.
While en route to the bank, a Lee County Sheriff’s deputy identified a vehicle at the intersection of Cypress Lake Drive and South Pointe Boulevard that matched the description of the suspect vehicle and a traffic stop was conducted a short distance away.
Deputies identified Kraig William Knight, 44, as the driver. Knight matched the description of the robbery suspect, officials said. He was detained while investigators met with witnesses to the robbery.
Detectives met with multiple witnesses who provided statements that identified Knight as the suspect in the robbery, officials said, adding detectives also located items in Knight’s car that linked him to the crime.
Knight was charged with one felony count of bank robbery and one felony count of wearing a mask during the commission of a crime.
He was taken to the Lee County Jail for booking.
