Charter school system to host fund-raiser

By Staff | Apr 15, 2009

Students at Cape Coral Municipal Charter Schools created a number of theme baskets that will be auctioned off at a Family Fun Day and Auction this weekend.
The community is invited Saturday from 2-6 p.m. to attend the family event for free at the Oasis campus.
According to Kevin Colpoys, executive director of the Municipal Charter Schools Foundation, this is the first time a single event is hosted by all of the schools in the system.
“This is the first time the two elementary schools, middle school and high school have all gone together to do a single event,” he said. “The schools have done individual events in the past.”
Besides the auctioning of the theme baskets, there is a live auction where donated items such as gift certificates or theme park passes will be up for bidding. Family Fun Day will also offer a carnival for children in the cafeteria from 3-6 p.m., and live entertainment from 2-5 p.m. under a big tent on school grounds.
Cape Coral Parks and Recreation will set up activities, games and prizes for children, and vendors will offer food and refreshments. Dennis Reilly, a local singer and caricature artist, will perform for 90 minutes and draw comical portraits for the rest of the afternoon. Archie and the Jugheads, a local band featuring Christa McAuliffe Principal Dr. Lee Bush, will also perform.
“The proceeds will go to the foundation and it, in turn, will grant that money back to schools based on the need the principals identify,” said Colpoys.
The foundation was created at the end of 2004 and raises money for school grants. When a principal or educator makes a request for funding, the foundation board will review the request and make a decision, he explained.
There will be approximately 100 theme baskets up for auction. Each child brought in an item for the classroom basket, Colpoys said, but certain grade levels are having a hard time collecting donations because of the economy.
“We are hoping we get a good turnout of parents and kids,” he said.
