MPIFCD marks future home of Station #4
Those entering Matlacha along Pine Island Road will notice a new sign indicating the acquisition of property to be used to expand the fire district coverage. The sign states “Future Home of Station #4” which will serve the residents in Matlacha as well as all of the east end of the Matlacha-Pine Island Fire Control District.
The property is located at the corner of Pine Island Road and Scallop Lane, just east of the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce Welcome Center. The 1.25-acre property fronts Pine Island Road between Scallop and Pompano roads and runs 300 feet down the length of Scallop to the Pine Island Water Company substation.
“We are getting closer to obtaining our goals and are pleased to have officially marked the location of the Matlacha fire station,” said MPIFCD commissioner Ken Cox. “I can speak for all of the commissioners when I say that we are extremely pleased with the progress we have made so far.”
At this point, funds have not been budgeted for the project, but some funding may be provided by Lee County EMS for the construction of Station #4 in Matlacha.“
Funding has been committed to by EMS, however the amount has not yet been determined.
“We do have a commitment from EMS to help fund the station so that they may house equipment there as well,” said Commissioner Cox. “It is the hope of the district that EMS will come on board with the majority of the expense. If that is the case, they will have control of the hammer when it comes to the size and design of the station, but our vision is that the Matlacha station will be similar to Station #3 in Bokeelia but perhaps have a smaller bay area.“
At this point a construction schedule for the new station has not yet been established, however, the land purchase secures the location for future development.
In an effort to provide the best possible service for the residents of Pine Island and Matlacha, plans had been in place to bring the district back to four stations which had been in place in past years.
Looking into the future further, the present board of fire commissioners also would like to see the eventual replacement of Station #2 in St. James City.
“The metal building that has housed the St. James City Fire Department for more than 20 years has limited growth potential, outdated technology and a very low storm rating. While our district is a long way away from this project, our thoughts are already there,” said Commissioner Cox.
Station #3 in Bokeelia is currently nearing completion and a dedication ceremony has been scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 24, at 10:30 a.m. The public is welcome to attend the ceremony.
