Police: Intoxicated driver sideswipes car

By Staff | Dec 23, 2008

A Naples woman was arrested for sideswiping a car while driving under the influence of alcohol Monday, according to police.
Melissa M. Johnston, 28, was driving west on Southeast 36th Terrace when she drifted to the center of the road, striking the side of an eastbound vehicle driven by Remy L. Bivona, reports state. The accident happened at about 9:30 p.m.
Johnston was charged with DUI and property damage.
Bivona told police she was not able to move out of the way of Johnston’s car in time due to mailboxes being in the way.
Both drivers stopped in front of 1229 S.E. 36th Terrace and made contact. According to Bivona, Johnston seemed incoherent.
Johnston reportedly told police she was OK, but did not want to get in trouble.
Officers said they smelled a strong odor of alcohol coming from Johnston’s breath and that she was incoherent when questioned.
Johnston was administered a field sobriety test for DUI which she performed poorly, police said.
When taken to the Cape Coral Police Department for booking, Johnston suffered a panic attack which required her to be medically treated at the Cape Coral Emergency Room, reports state.
She was later medically released and taken to the Lee County Jail in apparent good health.
Johnston remained in custody Tuesday evening on $500 bond, according to booking records.
