Banks Engineering held a greater Pine Island neighborhood meeting last week to advise and gain input from Pine Island residents about a Publix Super Market to be built at 5100 Pine Island Road, N.W. The meeting was held at Fire Station #1 on Pine Island Road.

Publix purchased 8.13 acres of the property known as Calusa Cay directly across Pine Island Road from Island Conclave.

Banks Engineering of Fort Myers will be moving to have the development order approved as soon as possible. A public meeting is required prior to submitting a development order.

"We're very excited to announce a new Publix Super Market on Pine Island Road," spokesperson Michael Leeds said. "The store is approximately 29,000 square feet. It's a newer store Publix debuted a few years ago. Publix stores average about 48,000 square feet but this is a smaller store at 29,000 square feet. It will have a full selection of products and a pharmacy."

The Publix purchase included only the store footprint and parking. There is additional retail planned in two out-parcels plus a small retail strip. The owners of the remaining property retain the right to build additional retail.

Leeds then conducted a question and answer session with those in attendance.

Q. "We have severe traffic issues on Pine Island and Matlacha every season. Have there been traffic studies to determine what the impact will be when the Publix is built?"

A. Leeds explained that a traffic study had been completed in 2013 but that a new study would be needed to meet the requirements of the 2019 development order.

Q. "There is a 7-Eleven being built nearby. Will the traffic study take that added traffic into account?"

A. The traffic study will take into consideration the 7-Eleven and the additional businesses added after Publix is completed.

Q. "How are they going to manage traffic turning into the Publix?"

A. "Our plans include deceleration lanes to enter the Publix parking lot. Also, the current plans call for the addition of a third center lane for turns when traveling east."

Q. "Is the going to be a traffic light?"

A. "No."

Q. "Can the parking lot be done in crushed shells."

A. "It's almost impossible to roll a shopping cart on crushed shells."

Q. "Can the esthetics be changed to the style and color of the new fire house?"

A. "Absolutely. Photos can be taken and Publix will take those changes into consideration."

The property along Pine Island Road will include a sidewalk as well as the new road on the west side of the property. That road will be the access road to future residential development behind the Publix.

Construction is planned to start in the fall of 2020 with a completion date of early 2021.
