Last Saturday, volunteers from across the island helped collect non-perishable food as part of the National Letter Carriers "Stamp Out Hunger" campaign. The campaign is the largest food drive in the nation.

"We had a great day Saturday," Pine Island Food Pantry Board President Dave Grueser said. "This is the drive that provides so much for the Pine Island Food Pantry and the collection that carries us through the summer and this year's drive brought in over 6,000 pounds of food.

"In most areas the postal carriers pick up the food but on Pine Island it's a little different," Grueser said. "Pine Island has lots of volunteers. There were volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 20, Matlacha Hookers, F.I.S.H. (Friendly Islanders Sending Help), students from the Methodists Church Pilot Group, Pine Island Community Church, Wreaths Across America, Our Lady of Miraculous Medal Church and the Food Pantry.

"We also had a special ceremony to recognize Peg Cruckshank," Grueser said. "Peg has been chairwoman of food receiving and sorting for the past six years and has done a super job, so we recognized Peg as 'Volunteer of the Year.'"

All food donated on the island goes to the Pine Island Food Pantry and stays on the Island.

The Pine Island Food Pantry is at Our Lady of Perpetual Medal Church, 12175 Stringfellow Road, Bokeelia. Call 239-209-0074 for additional information.
