Friday morning, Pine Island Elementary 2nd grade student Isabella Rodgers presented a check for $700 to the new Cape Coral Animal Shelter in memory of her father Dr. Mark Rodgers, who passed away Nov. 22, 2018.

"As you all know, Isabella has been collecting money for the Cape Coral Animal Shelter over the past couple of months," Principal Steve Hook said. "Everyone has been very charitable with their giving and we've managed to raise $700."

Pamela Aubuchon, Cape Coral Animal Shelter board member, accepted the check.

One of Dr. Rodgers’ patients donated $100 to have an inscribed brick placed in the PIE school courtyard with the inscription: “Isabella and friends honor with love Dr. Mark Rodgers.”

"Thank you very much and on behalf of the board and the no-kill shelter coming to Cape Coral," she said. "I am honored that you chose our organization to do all this wonderful work. I hope when we open this fall that you come and visit and play your part in our mission, which is to be more aware in your community and to welcome pets into your home. Thank you."

The no-kill shelter is to be built at 325 S.W. Second Ave., next to Sun Splash Family Waterpark in Cape Coral.
