Small Business Saturday 2018

November 6, 2018
Pine Island Eagle

To the editor

This Nov. 24, we want to share Small Business Saturday with you! It's a holiday shopping tradition that celebrates small businesses like ours. And it wouldn't be a celebration without customers like you joining us.

So, mark your calendar for Nov. 24 ? the Saturday after Thanksgiving ? and get ready to Shop Small with us. Grab a friend or family member and head to St .James City for a day of shopping & fun stop by the Olde Florida Outposts joined again in support of SBS by the Ragged Ass Saloon, Monroe Canal Marina, Two Fish inn and our newest local business in St James City Apex Aqua Adventures.

The doors will be open from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. All the participants will have their own specials and promotions. Visit each one and have your passport stamped by all to be eligible to win a gift basket.

The Olde Florida Outpost will be hosting a vendor and local artist market with 15 participants (some returning favorites and new talent) displaying their wares, and Kuztum Karts will have some of their golf carts on display in front of the shoppe. Bobby Mann will be performing his island style karaoke from 12-4 p.m. and there will be free hot dogs and soft drinks available beginning at noon.

I really want to get a better understand out in our community of what Small Business Saturday is. Major retailers have Black Friday as their big shopping day, and on-line businesses have Cyber Monday, but American Express designated the Saturday in-between for small mom and pop businesses and that's what all of us on the island are, individually owned and operated.

When I first started this campaign, some businesses said to me, 'Well, we're are not a shop like you, so it's not beneficial to us.' But this is the furthest thing from the truth, and here are my examples why. Ragged Ass Saloon is a bar and restaurant, but they have a retail department. Who wouldn't want a hat or shirt from their favorite hangout, not to mention why not give someone a gift certificate as a present this year.

Monroe Canal Marina has a great line of fishing attire and casual wear, tackle, bait, gas, food and beverages, and, of course, gift certificates are available as well.

At Two Fish Inn you can get a gift certificate for an overnight stay or weekend getaway maybe, they've also got a little gift shop as well. The point being it's your business you decide how and what you want to promote and sell.

You can help get the word out and celebrate Small Business Saturday by using #shopsmall on Facebook and all your social networks.

Thank you for all your support, and see you Saturday, Nov. 24!
