Last Tuesday, Aug. 14, the Yucatan Waterfront Restaurant in Matlacha joined the Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce to hold its Grand Opening ribbon-cutting.

Rob Reilly, general manager of Matlacha's newest restaurant said, "We opened about a year ago but we wanted to make some improvements before having our Grand Opening."

"They're all about 'taking a bite out of paradise' while enjoying tasty regional flavors," Greater Pine Island Chamber of Commerce executive director Jennifer Jennings said. "And the views are certainly among Southwest Florida's most beautiful."

Reilly manages two restaurants for owner Tom Kolar. The first Yucatan Beach Stand opened in Fort Myers Beach 11 years ago and was so successful Kolar decided to open a second location. When the Sandy Hook Fish and Rib House was for sale, Kolar decided Matlacha would be a perfect second location.

"We've been in this building for a year and wanted to make a lot of changes beginning with giving the interior a new look," Reilly said. "We have all new furniture, which transforms the whole look of the restaurant. Tom wanted to remove the entire wall that faces the water and replace it with garage style doors so we could open the restaurant up for fresh air and to take advantage of the beautiful view."

It took 10 months to get through the permitting process before construction could begin on the wall.

"So those doors have only been in for a month," Reilly said. "What we're trying to accomplish is to recreate that vibe we have at the Fort Myers Beach restaurant. So many of our customers come from someplace else and living here they want palm trees and balmy breezes and that's what we're trying to provide."

Reilly said the new restaurant kept several dishes from the Sandy Hook Fish and Rib House on the menu.

"In fact, a few of them were so good we brought them to the Fort Myers Beach restaurant," Reilly said. "We do a lot of fresh seafood at both restaurants but our specials here are often different because we have a different clientele here."

Online reviews for the restaurant have been mostly positive.

"I call it laid back, casual and comfortable," Jennings said. "I think the garage doors and the deck for outdoor seating are a wonderful addition."

"What I want people to know is we've just started on the improvements and aren't done yet," Reilly said. "Yucatan Waterfront features indoor and outdoor seating with million dollar views of Matlacha Pass Aquatic Preserve from our new waterside patio. I'd like to invite everyone to give us a try they won't be disappointed."

Yucatan Waterfront is located at 4875 Pine Island Road, Matlacha, Florida, 33993. For additional details and information, please call the Yucatan Waterfront 239-283-0113 or visit the restaurant's website at yucatanwaterfront.com/
