Where has common courtesy gone?

To the editor:

On Saturday morning I went for my usual "morning walk." The neighborhood is rather isolated and usually the only vehicles one might encounter are those of the residents. On this particular Saturday morning I came across a woman walking her dog near an empty lot. I said, "Good morning ma'am" as I tipped my hat slightly. She stopped and looked at me and said, "My, oh my, I haven't had a gentleman tip his hat to me in ages." I replied, "I am "old school" ma'am."

As I continued my walk I wondered how long the doors of the "old school" will remain closed. As one reads the news nowadays common respect and courtesy is nowhere to be found.
