Babysitting Course to be offered at Four Freedoms Park

July 5, 2018
Pine Island Eagle

There are openings still available for youths 11 to 16 years old who would like to learn more about babysitting later this month at Four Freedoms Park.

The course will be offered from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, July 28. Due to the course being part of a national program there is a max of 12 youngsters who can register. Registration is $40 and can be done by calling (239) 574-0804.

The course is also open to Girl Scouts, 9 years of age, in need of their badge.

"It's a six-hour course and they do it all in the same day," Four Freedoms Park Senior Recreation Specialist Ivonne Yepes said. "Children have to bring their lunch and a water bottle."

Partcipants learn everything from the introduction of babysitting as a business, to safety and injury prevention, playtime, first-aid, as well as basic caregiving skills such as feeding, burping and changing a diaper. Although they do not receive a certification, CPR for infants and adolescents is also taught.

"They love it. They really get to learn a lot," Yepes said.

One of the strategies taught during the class deals with how to handle someone getting hurt without panicking.

She said babysitting affects everyone as it includes looking after siblings and neighbors.

"It applies in everyday activities and everyday life. It's beneficial even if you are not planning a babysitting business," Yepes said. "It will go with them for the rest of their lives, that's for sure."

The class will have both hands-on activities, and instruction through a workbook.

Yepes said the participants will bring a doll for such hands-on activities as burping and diaper changing.

As far as the workbook, the student can take it home with them at the conclusion of the class. She said it is beneficial because it has such information as how to stop a nose bleed and bandaging a knee after it's scrapped.

Once the course is completed, Yepes said they will receive a card stating they finished the course.

Future dates have been picked out for the babysitting course. She said she will share the dates when individuals call (239) 574-0804.
