Matlacha Hookers’ School Supply Drive under way

June 6, 2018
Pine Island Eagle

School is out! That means that it's time for the Matlacha Hookers to begin their summer fund raiser - the annual school supply drive.

The Hookers are once again counting on the generosity of the island residents. There are many families on Pine Island struggling to make ends meet, so the group needs to pool resources and help these families out by providing the school supplies their children need to be successful in school.

Frequently teachers have to buy supplies using their own money. The Matlacha Hookers want to make sure that our Pine Island Elementary teachers and students have the supplies that it takes to help the island school continue its program of excellence.

Here are the items that PIE teachers have asked for: backpacks without wheels, school boxes/pencil boxes, scissors (blunt tips or Fiskars sharp), #2 pencils, erasers, Expo whiteboard markers (fine tip and chisel tip), Ziplock bags, glue sticks, Crayola colored pencils (16 count), pens (blue, black and red), Elmer's glue, loose leaf paper( wide-ruled), marbled composition books (wide ruled), spiral notebooks (one-subject), rulers with English and metric, Crayola markers (washable), Crayola crayons, Handiwipes, paper towels, Scotch tape, fun stickers, yellow highlighters, plastic pocket folders (3-prong) yellow, green and blue, Kleenex, 3-ring binders (1/2 inch and 1 inch), protractors and new this year: ear buds.

Supplies may be donated at the following businesses: in Matlacha at the Post Office, The Perfect Cup, Blue Dog Restaurant, Sandy Hook Restaurant and Trader's Hitching Post. At the Center, bring supplies to Little Lilly's, PICC, the library, Dollar Store, Winn-Dixie, Island Grill, PI Family Salon, Centennial Bank, Century 21 or Cambio Dermatology. In Bokeelia, you may donate your items at Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church. In St. James City, take donations to the Olde Florida Outpost.

The drive began June 5 and runs until Saturday, July 28. School starts in the first week of August so the Hookers must limit collection to June and July.

The students and Matlacha Hookers appreciate islanders' generosity and willingness to help. Monetary donations will also be accepted and given directly to PIE. Please send checks with the notation" School Supplies" to The Matlacha Hookers, P.O.Box 111, Matlacha, FL 33993.
