Pine Island resident Sgt. Steve Thorpe was awarded the Pine Island Elementary "Soaring Eagle Award" by his son Aaron last week. Sgt. Thorpe is a military police officer in the U.S. Army and will be deployed later this month to Saudi Arabia.

"This is our third quarter principal's party and as you all know at the heart of our school is kindness, caring, respect, honor, and putting others before self," Principal Steve Hook said. "At the heart of the greatness of our country is the fact that there are people willing to put others before themselves.

"We are honored and blessed today to have Sgt. Steve Thorp, Aaron's dad, who is being deployed to Saudi Arabia and we wanted to give you a special Pine Island sendoff. We respect and honor your service and this young man (Aaron Thorp) is going to present Sgt. Thorpe with a special Soaring Eagle Award."

"This is such a special honor and a privilege that our small community supports what we're doing," Sgt. Thorpe said. "I was here for the Veterans Day ceremony and I don't know anywhere else where anything like this is done. It means a lot to me."
