To the editor:

Could you imagine a world where you were living on the streets day and night? Could you imagine not having food for weeks on end? What about suddenly getting scooped up to live in a free, new home? What if you were given enough food for a full year?

Hi, my name is Marza Hiatt and I am an eighth grader at Mariner Middle School. Every year, each eighth grader is expected to perform a community project for the International Baccalaureate program at our school. For my community project, I want to help out one of my favorite local causes: Helping Paws Cat Sanctuary. I have loved and volunteered at Helping Paws for about 4 years now, and I have kept them, the kitties, and the fellow volunteers near and dear to my heart. This organization is an incredible influence in our community and local society. So, this is why I want to help collect canned cat food for all of the amazing, adoptable kitties at the sanctuary.

I talked with the director of Helping Paws and asked a simple question: How much canned cat food do you go through a year? The answer was about 18,000 cans a year! I recently also read that Pine Island has a population of around 8,500 people. If every person on Pine island donated 2 or 3 cans, all the wonderful Pine Island cats and kittens could be full for an entire year!

If you are interested in donating and helping local kitties, please donate in the box labeled "Kitty Food" in front of the Helping Paws Cat Sanctuary located at 10060 Mallory Parkway in the Industrial Center located just south of the four-way stop on Pine Island. If there are any kitty-loving business owners out there that would like to make a direct donation, or set up a donation box, please email me at I will decorate a box for you! The Pine Island Tax & Accounting Company located at the Center at 10530 Stringfellow Rd. has already agreed to receive donations. Please stop by this convenient location to make your canned food donation today! Thank you so much for your contribution and for helping me reach my goal!
