March 21, 2018
By ED FRANKS (efranks@breezenewspapers.com) , Pine Island Eagle

This Saturday, March 24, for the VFW Classic Car Show will be held at the Greater Pine Island VFW on Stringfellow Road.

"I'm working to bring back to the VFW the successful car shows we've had in past years," VFW Commander Austin White said. "We have lots of very nice cars on Pine Island and Matlacha from classics to hot rods, to antique, restored and modified. I'd like to invite those car owners to help us raise money for our veterans."

Registration is $15 per car at the gate but only $10 to pre-register. Registration is from 8-11 a.m. Judging cars is at 1 p.m. and trophies will be awarded at 2 p.m.

Pine Island resident Steve Rich has two cars registered for the Show.

"The older car is a 1939 Buick sedan," Rich said. "It has a 350 Chevy engine, automatic transmission and rides on air bags. It was originally sold in Pendleton, Oregon, to a traveling salesman and I still have his documentation with the car. It is identical to the car I drove in high school and college."

The second car is a 1968 Plymouth Barracuda. It has its original engine and transmission and it was restored by Rich in 2012.

"It is identical to the first car that my wife and I purchased when we married in 1968," Rich said. "She always wanted another Barracuda, so she found this one in California. She picked out the interior and exterior colors and has won many awards at car shows."

There will be plenty to see and do at the car show.

"We are having 50/50 drawings and hot dogs and hamburgers for everybody plus the beer wagon," White said. "The money we raise is for our veterans in need from the past, present and even future. The money we raise goes into a special fund for veterans relief and 100 percent of the funds goes to the veterans."

The VFW Post is at 8150 Stringfellow Road, St. James City. For additional information, call 239-283-2277.
