Protect our children

March 7, 2018

To the editor:

I have been reading with interest the letters from readers that think we should make new laws against guns, have teachers go on strike, etc. All 50 states have passed laws allowing qualified individuals to carry certain concealed weapons in public. Forty-two states require concealed weapons permits while eight states generally allow individuals to concealed weapons in public without a permit. We have teachers in all 50 states. How many have concealed weapon permits? Those are the ones we should be checking into to see if they are willing to carry in their school. If I was a teacher, I would. I am not a member of the NRA and I don't desire to be a member.

We should be looking at this for the protection of children, not for special interest parties that wish to ban guns. I am originally from Chicago. You could not pay me to go back and live there. We have friends that won't even go out at night. How many innocent lives have been taken by a drive-by shooter with an illegal weapon. These thugs are not going to register or go through a background check. Taking guns away just gives the crooks and gangs better targets.

Please think twice about your gun control. Many gun owners have no problem with three-day waiting periods and banning bum stocks. Let's get busy and protect our schools' children. Let the cities/counties/states cough up some cash to hire retired policemen or unemployed military people. Quit buying vacant land and wasting money. Ask that of your elected officials if they will support spending money for the protection of the children. If they give you some dumb excuse, don't vote for them.
